Hydrex office in Rotterdam has officially opened

On the 1st of March the new Hydrex office in Rotterdam has officially opened. Its purpose is to improve the delivery of our services and underwater expertise to the maritime industry of Rotterdam.

To enable a fast mobilization throughout the entire Rotterdam port without delaying a ship’s commercials operations, Hydrex dive support vessels will be stationed in Rotterdam. These workboats are fully equipped with hydraulic cranes, winches, a dive spread and control room.

This allows Hydrex to offer simple maintenance operations as well as repairs on all parts of the underwater ship propulsion system and the hull. Hydrex operations are class approved and carried out alongside or at anchorage while commercial activities continue without disruption. Hydrex does this with qualified and experienced diver/technicians, state-of-the-art equipment and advanced techniques that create drydock-like conditions underwater.

Although Hydrex has been active in Rotterdam for over 40 years, the growing demand for services in the area instigated the opening of our office on the 1st of March. An example of a recent operation in the port is the installation of a doubler plate over the cavitated area of the rudder of a 170-meter container vessel. This operation was performed during the ship’s scheduled maintenance stop. (An article on this operation, together with pictures can be found here.)

Feel free to contact us if you would like to have more information on our new office or if you want to find out how we can assist you and your vessel.

A thriving company in constant search of new opportunities

September 2015 saw the start of a large expansion of the Hydrex headquarters in Antwerp. This expansion is the logical result of the growth we have undergone in the last couple of years.

The construction of new offices has been finished. These offices and meeting rooms will accommodate the constantly growing staff of our headquarters. At the same time we have started a total refurbishing of the existing offices and warehouses as well as the exterior of all buildings. A totally new workshop has also been added to the existing locations and new training facilities are in the works, bringing the total area covered by our premises to over 5.000 m².

Being located at the Asiadok has always made the Hydrex headquarters ideally suited to mobilize our workboats to operations in Belgium, the Netherlands and France. A wide range of state-of-the-art equipment and tools is available at all times in our fast response center and can be loaded onto the boats immediately. A recent extension of the quay space available to Hydrex has increased the logistic possibilities even further.

Besides the headquarters in Antwerp, Hydrex has two other offices ready to mobilize to operations around the world. Our premises in Clearwater also cover over 5.000 m² while the office in Algeciras covers an area of 400 m².

Since the company was founded in 1974, we have never stopped looking for new ways to assist ship owners. Our constantly growing range of services needs an equally full range of capable staff members. From the technical department doing the planning, over the R&D department handling the engineering aspect to the diver/technicians who carry out the class-approved operations. New team members have been recruited in all areas. They need the best possible work environment to deliver the best possible quality for our customers.

  • Introducing: Subsea Magazine

    14/08/2015

We have changed the name of our monthly magazine. Up until now it was always called the Ecospeed Magazine. However, over the last few years the range of products that are covered in this publication have been growing. To represent this we felt that a name change was in order. And what better  name giver than the company that has developed all these products: Subsea Industries NV.

Our ship hull performance system Ecospeed is off course still an important part of the content of the magazine, but over the last couple of years there has also been a lot of attention for Ecoshield, our coating for underwater running gear. Last year Ecolock, designed for offshore units, joined the ranks. Besides our award winning coating family of hard hull coating systems there is also our evolving line of underwater hull and propeller cleaning equipment.

Whether it is the range of underwater cleaning equipment or the various coating systems, all products produced by Subsea Industries have the same goal in mind: To keep the underwater part of your vessel in the best possible condition for its entire lifetime at the best possible performance.

If you would like to learn more about Subsea Industries products contact us for information, or visit our website. If you want to read our new magazine, click on the link below.

Subsea Industries wins QinetiQ 2014 Maritime Innovation Award

The 2014 Maritime Innovation Award – given jointly by the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) and technology-based services and solutions provider QinetiQ – has been presented to Subsea Industries for the product Ecolock. Now in its second year, the Award recognises outstanding scientific or technological research in hydrodynamics, propulsion, structures and material which offers the potential to make significant improvements in the design, construction and operation of marine vessels and structures.

“The maritime industry today is facing many challenges as it responds to the increasing demands of operators, regulators and society for greater efficiency, safety and the protection of the environment. Meeting these challenges will require innovative thinking in all sectors of the industry," said RINA Chief Executive Trevor Blakeley. "However, in an industry which is highly dependent on technology, it is in technological and scientific research and development that innovation will have perhaps the greatest impact, in providing ships and marine structures which cost less to design, build and operate, are safer, and are more sensitive to the environment.

“Ecolock is a fine example of the ongoing technological innovation needed to address industry’s challenges of today, and one worthy of the Maritime Innovation Award,” he added.

This year's RINA – QinetiQ Maritime Innovation Award was presented to Manuel Hof, Subsea Industries’ Production Executive at the Institution’s 2015 Annual Dinner on 30th April.

  • ECOLOCK® long-lasting protection for offshore hulls now available

    30/10/2014
ECOLOCK® long-lasting protection for offshore hulls now available

Ecolock is a new product from the makers of Ecospeed and Ecoshield. It is designed to protect offshore vessels for decades without the need for drydocking. Increasingly, offshore vessels such as FPSOs, FSOs, FLRSUs and others used for offshore oil and gas exploration, drilling, storage and transport need to stay out of drydock for 15, 25 even 40 years. The challenge has been to protect the underwater hull from corrosion and to provide a cleanable surface so that the biofouling that accumulates can be removed successfully and safely for UWILD and to reduce weight. Ecolock is the answer to that challenge.

For decades it has been known that glassflake reinforced hard coatings last longer, are tougher and more resilient, need less repair and replacement than any other type of hull coating. Soft coatings such as biocidal antifouling and foul-release coatings do not hold up well. They need to be repaired or replaced often which is not good news for shipowners and operators and particularly offshore operators who need to keep their ships out of drydock. Their antifouling or foul release properties require that the ship move through the water at relatively high speed. On stationary vessels the fouling simply builds up.

Since the early 2000s a hard, cleanable, non-toxic, glassflake reinforced coating has been available, Ecospeed. Ecospeed is actually a coating system which combines a hard coating with routine in-water cleaning. The coating holds up for a remarkably long time, even in the ice or other harsh conditions. It can be cleaned as often as needed and becomes smoother not rougher with such cleaning. It has been used in offshore applications.

It was found over time that a tougher version of Ecospeed, Ecoshield, is an even more effective protection against the forces of cavitation and corrosion that constantly impinge on the rudder and other running gear of a ship. Now Ecospeed and Ecoshield have acquired a cousin, also a glassflake reinforced coating, but this one intended specifically to meet the hull protection requirements of offshore vessels: Ecolock.

Ecolock is an extremely tough and durable coating designed to remain in excellent condition for 15 - 25 years without drydocking, repair or replacement. Ecolock can be cleaned underwater as often as needed to meet the UWILD and weight requirements of FPSOs, drill ships and other offshore vessels. Ecolock is the result of continual R&D on offshore hull coatings since the 1990s.

    Glassflake reinforced, non-toxic, cleanable

Ecolock is completely non-toxic. It is a hard, impermeable coating which even the toughest barnacle will not penetrate. This is in direct contrast to antifouling or foul-release coatings. Barnacles and other fouling organisms attach and penetrate those coatings right through to the steel permitting the start and spread of corrosion. In the case of Ecolock the barnacles, coral and other fouling organisms can be removed completely by divers using special equipment, leaving no trace and restoring the coating to its original condition. And because it is non-toxic, it is safe to clean the Ecolock coated hull when needed for UWILD or simply to reduce the weight when too much fouling has accumulated. This can be done even in sensitive waters.

    Application

Surface preparation and application are similar to those required for Ecospeed and Ecoshield.  The coating can be applied very rapidly. No primer, mid-coat, tie-coat, top-coat, corrosion protection scheme or any other complications. Ecolock is simply applied directly to the surface in two or more coats, each of 500µm DFT. Overcoating time is about three hours, depending on temperature and humidity. No special equipment is needed. Environmental conditions required are the usual ones for coating application. The vessel can be launched 24 hours after the final coat has been applied.

As long as it is standardly applied, Ecolock comes with a 10, 15 or 20 year warranty, if the coating is maintained according to the specifications. The thickness of the coating can be increased to extend its longevity. Even if minor mechanical damage does occur, because of the superior adhesion of Ecolock no undercreep will occur.

A White Paper with full details about protecting the hulls and tanks of offshore vessels is available in the Publications/Papers section of www.shiphullperformance.org for free download.
